NFL teams are comprised of offensive and defensive weapons, but the most successful ones also have big ones on special teams. In the Chargers’ 13-6 victory over the Oakland Raiders on Sunday, a primary weapon in their arsenal was punter Mike Scifres.
The 12-year veteran punted nine times in his team’s victory for 380-yards, averaging 42.2 yards per punt. Controlling field position was key to the Bolts’ success and Scifres nailed it all game long.
“They’ve been (in) close games, games that could have gone either way; similar to ours.,” mentioned Titans Head Coach Mike Mularkey. “They’re a good football team that something here or there has caused a loss or given them a chance to win. I know they’ve been in every game as we have.”
Having watched the Bolts on film, Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota has been impressed by the team’s defense.
Now, with the Chargers 7-4 and heading to Baltimore to kick off a key five-game stretch with high postseason aspirations, the team is turning to a rookie. He had his first start last Sunday against the Rams, and he was proud of the way he played but noted there is always room to improve. Based on his performance and the way he’s developed over the season, the Bolts have full confidence in his ability.
